What is an isolator switch?

An isolator switch is an electrical disconnection device installed near the outdoor condenser unit that safely cuts off all power supply during air conditioning maintenance and repairs.

An isolator switch is a manual electrical safety device mounted on or near the outdoor condenser unit of an air conditioning system. It allows technicians to completely disconnect power to the unit before servicing, maintenance, or repairs, protecting against accidental electrical contact and hazardous equipment startup.

In Singapore, isolator switches are required by electrical safety regulations for all air conditioning installations. The switch must be clearly visible, easily accessible, and within arm's reach of the outdoor condenser. It typically takes the form of a double-pole switch that cuts off both live and neutral connections, or a fused isolator that combines switching with circuit protection.

When servicing an air conditioner in Tampines or elsewhere, a qualified technician will isolate the unit using this switch before beginning work. This prevents electrical shock and ensures that refrigeration components and compressors cannot restart unexpectedly during repairs. Without proper isolation, condensers pose serious risk to both technicians and property.

Building owners and facility managers should ensure the isolator switch is installed during system setup or upgrade. Professional air conditioning providers will install compliant switches that meet local electrical codes and Singapore Standards.
